Mandala Painting Workshop | Lily Swain

I recently had the opportunity to co-lead a unique art/yoga workshop alongside Amber Young, owner of Surya Daya Yoga Studio in Almonte, ON. This was special for a few reasons, mainly being able to combine my love of teaching art with my yoga practice. I have been doing yoga almost as long as I have been making art and blending the two was a fulfilling experience.

This mandala painting and yoga workshop was designed for children ages 8 -12 and a caregiver. The afternoon included yoga, intention setting and a breathwork practice designed to release stress and tension, getting energy moving and connecting with our creativity.

The colourful, freehand mandala paintings used mixed-media materials and were a fun bonding experience that aimed to strengthen connection through collaboration as creative equals. The circular and repetitive design of a mandala offers a meditative focal point, helping to calm the mind and tap into creative energy. It was a beautiful afternoon making space for participants to connect and create a deeply personal piece together.

I grew up in an artistic family and was encouraged to express my creativity from a young age. I pursued my love of making art and graduated from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design BFA program (Vancouver, BC). My passion for collaboration and working with people inspired me to also earn a degree in Art Education from York University (Toronto, ON).

In 2013 I moved to the Almonte area where I was embraced by a rich arts and yoga community. Over the years I have developed special relationships through my art and yoga and it is rewarding to organically manifest specialty workshops that combine these passions. I look forward to offering more for various age groups in the New Year.

As we enter a new decade I look back over the past ten years and feel grateful for having reached many goals and living my dream as a full-time stay at home mom and artist. I am blessed with a beautiful healthy family, in-home studio, space in the countryside and a busy art career.

Cheers to many more fulfilling years as a part of this beautiful and unique community.
